Freedom and Learning Analytics

My two topics for the NetGen Ed project are freedom (choice) and learning analytics. Learning analytics is the interpretation of specific data and how certain people understand things.Learning analytics are not always directly connected with academic things. To sum all of that up, learning analytics are just personal interpretation. Some examples of learning analytics are doing homework, extracurricular activies. Everyone has different ideas about what freedom is. I think that freedom means that you can do whatever you want as long as you know its appropriate and you have to draw the line between inappropriate and appropriate. The reason that these go together is because you have freedom to actually do learning analytics. Like it is your choice to do homework, it is your choice to do extracurricular activites. If you dont have freedom then there is no actual learning analytics because there would be no choice to do homework or no choice to do extracurricular activies. All people have different amounts of freedom because everyone grew up with different families so therefore mostly all students interpret data differently and some people are different learners. In my opinion there is no possible way for one of these to exist without the other one, therefore they are perfect together.

Chapter 5

Don't you get bored when every single teacher and every single class is the same and everyday is the same- powerpoint, notes, then homework. Well I do. In Don Tapscott's Grown Up Digital Chapter 5 he talks about how the 8 net gen norms; freedom, customization, scrutiny, integrity, collaboration, entertainment, speed, and innovation can help make it so its easy to learn for students. I think that if teachers start using these then their classes wont be as repeitive and they wouldnt be so boring. If they used entertainment and speed I think that students would be much more involved in the lesson and they will actually pay attention and they will know what is going on. It would be easier for students to learn because all of the students would be involved and it would be quick, and high school students like quick. This would change the style of teaching from almost every teacher because they wouldnt be able to just be repetivite and they wouldnt do power points every day which arent always entertaining and they are almost never quick. He also talks about how students should be collaborating with eachother and not just relying off of the teacher trying to teach.

Tapscott's 8 Net Gem Norms

Tapscott's 8 Net Gem Norms are freedom, customization, scrutiny, integrity, collaboration, entertainment, speed, and innovation. As Tapscott says-
“These are the eight norms of the Net Generation.
• They value freedom-freedom to be who they are, freedom of choice.
• They want to customize everything, even their jobs.
• They learn to be skeptical, to scrutinize what they see and read in the media, including the Internet.
• They value integrity-being honest, considerate, transparent, and abiding by their commitments.
• They are great collaborators, with friends online and at work.
• They love to deal with entertainment.
• They thrive on speed.
• They love to innovate.
This is the net Generation…”
Freedom means that the kids are free and they are on a quest to be free. It means that they can do what they want and no one will be stopping them. It is also setting expectations for elders and for those to come in the future years. Customization is when they can make it how they like it and how they want it. People tend to customize stuff to fit their lifestyle. Scrutiny means basically to trust or verify. Integrity means to be honest and considerate of other users. If you use integrity then it will make it so people trust you and they will respect you because you consider them. To collaborate things means to put things together and come together. Entertainment means that they do what they like and it entertains them. Speed means that things take time and stuff doesn't happen immediately. Innovation means that you come up with new things. All of these show up in all types of technology. One instance where they show up is on World of Warfcraft, people use all of those or else they would not get any respect from any other players. If you do not use the 8 net gem norms even on facebook or any other social networking tool then people just will not respect you.

Accepting Criticism

I think that criticism is a huge learning tool and it can be a good thing or a bad thing if you take it the wrong way. The problem with criticism is that a lot of people don't take it in a good way and they just think that the person talking to them is making fun of them or trying to tear them down and point out the obvious mistake or problem. But if people take criticism the right way then it is a very good tool because almost everybody thinks in different ways. The more ways you do something, the more and more people that will appreciate it. I think that accepting criticism is a big thing in the real world and especially work because your peers always want you to do the best that you can, and I think that nowadays a lot of bosses or managers use criticism as a teaching tool. Even though accepting criticism can be hard at times you just need to take as much as you can out of what the person who is criticising you and use it to your advantage because like I said, people want you to do the best that you can.

Importance of Meeting Deadlines

Deadlines are very important in education and business. They are very important because they can help with organization and time management. If people don't meet deadlines then that can put them behind and they won't be able to move on with the business or class. They are important with time management because the person that makes the deadlines could have a calendar of when to move on and so you need to make sure you are done with what you need to be done with so you can move on. They also help with organization because there can be more than one deadline and you can make sure you have done what you need to have done. If you don't meet deadlines then that can put the whole class or business behind and then in the long run there might not be enough time to do what needed to be done. Meeting deadlines are also big in education because they can make or break your grades and without decent grades you won't be able to go to college and might not even be able to get a job. Deadlines are very important to meet because they create responsibility which is needed in life.

How Google Docs Can be Used in Businesses and Education

Google Docs can be very helpful in the business as well as the education world. People in businesses can use it in daily work by just writing down notes in a meeting or having a collaborative document where people can summarize what is happening and then when the meeting is over, they can all print off a copy of what happened at the meeting. That can also help students with education because if students have a project and you have to take notes but you don't have time in class you can make a collaborative document and share it with your group so they can view and edit it at home. Another interesting thing is that all of the people you share the document with can view and edit it at the same time. Also with Google docs you can make power point presentations, spreadsheet, form, drawing, or just a folder. Businesses can use all of this stuff to present, keep statistics, save things in an organized folder. Teachers can use the spreadsheet or the power point presentations to present to their students and teach with them. By using Google Docs, there are a lot of ways that people in businesses and education can take notes be organized, or make a presentation.

How diigo can be used by students

Diigo can be used in many ways for many people. It is a tool where people can save internet sites and upload videos and pictures. On Diigo you can collect and organize things, highlight things, bookmark things online, and the best part is you can access it anywhere. It is basically the newest form of note taking where you don't have to actually write things down on a piece of paper. You can look things up and then just save it to a bookmark and you don't have to remember the URL. Using Diigo as many people as you want can access it and you don't have to be in a conference  or at the same place. It is good for everyone at all ages and it is a good place for finding information and communicating.

Communicating Digitally

I think that communicating digitally has become part of everyone's every day life. Everything that you read off of the internet has been posted or taken from someone and it being read, therefore they are communicating with eachother. Things like Blogs, Facebook, Skype, and Twitter are all things that most people use and communicate digitally with. Although a lot of people do communicate digitally most of them do not realize that there are a couple rules and guidlines they need to follow called netiquette. Netiquette is just ettiquete on the internet. Some of the rules are don't plagiarize, know your audience, be respectful, be considerate of younger people, and never spam people. I think that as more and more people start getting used to a computer at a younger age, then these rules and guidlines will have a lot more affect on how people use the internet.

Digital Communication

I think that Digital Communication is a good thing because it it quick, it is easy to use and there are a lot of social networking skills and websites where everyone can see what is going on. They are a good thing because once someone posts something people can see it almost instantly and it is pretty easy to use and get used to. Things like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter are good examples of social networking and all three of those are places where people communicate digitally. Another way that a lot of people communicate digitally is games like World of Warcraft, or any other game where you are with real life people and you are talking to them. It is also a good skill to have because as time goes on, more and more people will be communicating digitally. Digital Communication is going to continue to get better each and every day.
